Chapter 15

The insistent ringing of the phone shattered the peaceful silence of the Parris penthouse. Isabella stirred in her sleep, her brow furrowed in annoyance. She reached for the receiver, her voice thick with sleep.

“Oui?” she mumbled, her eyes still closed.

A moment of silence followed, then a voice, thick with emotion, spoke. “Isabella, it’s Emily. I’m so sorry to wake you, but… it’s your mother.”

Isabella’s eyes snapped open, her heart pounding in her chest. “What’s wrong?” she asked, her voice suddenly alert.

“There’s been an accident,” Emily’s voice trembled. “A car accident. Your mother… she’s…”

The words hung heavy in the air, their meaning clear even before Emily spoke them. Isabella’s breath caught in her throat, her mind reeling.

“No,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “No, it can’t be.”

But even as she denied the truth, a cold dread settled over her. She knew, deep down, that Emily wouldn’t have called unless it was serious.

“I’m so sorry, Isabella,” Emily’s voice broke through her thoughts. “I’ll… I’ll come pick you up.”

Isabella hung up the phone, her hands trembling. She couldn’t believe it. Her mother, the woman who had always been so strong, so invincible, was gone.

A wave of grief washed over her, threatening to drown her in its intensity. She felt lost, alone, adrift in a sea of sorrow.

She stumbled out of bed, her legs shaky, her vision blurred with tears. She needed to find Elisa, the one person who could offer her comfort in this moment of despair.

Elisa woke to the sound of frantic knocking on her door. She fumbled for the bedside lamp, her heart pounding in her chest.

“Who is it?” she called out, her voice thick with sleep.

“It’s me, Isabella,” a voice, choked with emotion, replied.

Elisa’s eyes widened in alarm. She scrambled out of bed, throwing on a robe as she hurried to the door.

“Isabella, what’s wrong?” she asked, her voice filled with concern.

Isabella stood in the doorway, her face pale, her eyes red and swollen. She looked like a ghost, her usual composure shattered.

“My mother,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “She’s… she’s gone.”

Elisa’s heart sank. She reached out, pulling Isabella into a tight embrace. “Oh, Isabella,” she murmured, her voice filled with compassion. “I’m so sorry.”

Isabella clung to Elisa, her body shaking with sobs. She had never felt so vulnerable, so lost. The one person who had always been there for her, the one person she had always relied on, was gone.

Elisa held her close, whispering words of comfort, her own tears mixing with Isabella’s. She couldn’t imagine the pain Isabella was going through, but she knew that she would be there for her, through thick and thin.

They stood there for a long time, their bodies entwined, their tears mingling. In that moment of shared grief, their love deepened, their bond strengthened.

When Isabella finally calmed down, Elisa led her to the sofa, tucking a blanket around her. “Stay here,” she said softly. “I’ll make you some tea.”

Isabella nodded, her eyes filled with gratitude. She watched as Elisa bustled around the kitchen, her movements efficient and comforting.
